Hongre yare in 1128, Ongreiare in 1195, Hungeryere in 1279, Hungriyar in 1328, Hungre yare(s) in 1313 and 1430. 'Hungor' is old English for 'hunger', but might allude to barren ground, i.e. unprofitable weir. Owned by the prior of Durham. Extended beyond its limits by 42 fathoms in 1279. The main catch would have been salmon, but in fact a wider range of fish would have been taken (eg. Eels, pike, minnow, burbot, trout and lamprey' {G.N. Garmondsway (ed), 1939, 'Aelfric's Colloquy', pp 101-2}.
