1770 wreck of British craft which stranded on the Black Middens on her arrival at Shields from London; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, Dec. 1...Saturday morning as the LOVE AND UNION, Capt. Berry, from London, was coming into this harbour, she was drove upon the Black Middens, where she was lost: the hands were with difficulty saved...Several other vessels were at the same time drove on the Herd Sand, but happily got off next tide. These accidents were occasioned by a strong fresh setting out of the river.'
