South Shields, Herd Sand, Providence Lifeboat
In December 1849 the PROVIDENCE lifeboat overturned in a storm while trying to rescue the crew of the brig BETSY which had run aground on the Herd Sand. 20 pilots who were manning the lifeboat were drowned.
