The Ship Inn's landlord in 1878 was George Blair, described as 'an esteemed and jovial host… undoubtedly one of the most popular men on Tyneside… genial, good-natured and credited with an abundance of common sense'. George Blair was born in Allendale. He was a policeman, then a farmer, before becoming a publican. He rebuilt the pub as the Ship Hotel in 1901 and did catering for ships. Newcastle Breweries later took it over. It closed in 1962.
