Opened on Monday 25 November 1816 near the Black Horse public house. English grammar, writing, arithmetic, mensuration, land surveying, book keeping, mathematics, Latin and French were taught. An evening school was opened for those who could not attend during the day. Mr Dowie hoped 'he will give full Satisfaction to those who may favour him with the Education of their Children'.
