Demolished Building

1936-2008. Designed by J.E. Lewis. Described by Lynn Pearson as a 'splendid edifice'. Rather austere and institutional on the outside. Inside, the main pool, 100 x 39 feet, was spanned by tall reinforced concrete arches. There was raised seating to either side. It soon became the home of the Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club, which had formed in 1889. In 2006 it was announced that the Newcastle Road Baths would be replaced by the Olympic sized pool at the new Aquatic Centre. The baths closed in April 2008. The building was recorded by TWM Archaeology before demolition in 2011.
