Documentary Evidence
The Bensham Waggonway was in service by at least 1730, shown on a map of that date. It ran from coal pits at Bensham, through Gatesheaed Park to Rock Staith on the River Tyne just to the east of the old Newcastle Bridge. The map is not sufficiently accurate to securely establish the exact route of the waggonway.
