Coal Mining Site
New Painshaw Pit, sunk in 1792 and closed 1833. Depicted but not named on Bell's coalfield map of 1843. Tithe plan labels this area as 'waggonway, houses, gardens, pit and waste'. Site of explosion in 1822.
