Structure

This lock at the north end of the north half-tide basin, was built in 1890 for the River Wear Commissioners. It comprises high ashlar walls and a central pier, and two sets of steel gates (replaced in 1955) with hydraulic machinery. The lock was installed at the same time as the swing bridge between the half tide basin and Hudson Dock North, and operated by the hydraulic system which Sir William Armstrong invented and developed.
