Two lodges are shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map, surveyed c.1855, at the top of the drive to Birtley Hall. This one is on the east side of the entrance to the drive. It is not shown on the tithe map of 1846 so was presumably built in the period 1846-1855.
