          Description
The building of the north pier, circa 1785, resulted in a bank of shingle and sand forming at the site of what would become the North Dock in 1837. The area was immediately utilised by the Williamsons for leasing to ship builders and timber merchants. This is probably the area shown on Rain’s Eye Plan as a ship building yard.
