Wreath Quay Road, Coal Staith

This coal staithe of 19th century construction, with later alterations, comprises brick piers and platform facings. Formerly wood superstructure on the platform supported railway lines from which coal waggons could tip coal directly into the holds of ships. This is the last surviving coal staithe on the Wear, where once each bank was lined by staithes. The steel structure and conveyor attached to the brick piers were removed in circa 1994 due to potential safety problems. LISTED GRADE 2
