Herd Sand, Hygoea

NORWEGIAN BRIG, 1866 On Thursday 1st March 1866, at about 8pm, as the Norwegian brig HYGOEA, loaded with timber, was entering the Tyne for refuge, she was blown on the Herd Sand. The lifeboats TYNE and PROVIDENCE were launched and proceeded to her assistance. The vessel was pounded by heavy seas as she lay aground and was badly damaged with her masts gone. The TYNE, after much labour, got alongside to pick up the seven survivors of her eight-man crew; one man was lost as he attempted to jump into the lifeboat in the darkness.
