1793 wreck of Dutch cargo vessel which stranded on the Herd Sand en route from Dram to Amsterdam with deals. Crew Lost: 2 NB: At this period the appellation "Norway ship" does not refer to the nationality of the vessel, but rather to the kind of trade for which she was designed. The name YONGFROW and variants thereof indicates Dutch nationality, as does the word "yuffer", which is of Dutch origin.

These reports, however, may represent an alternative version of the loss of a Danish vessel (q.v.) in a similar area at approximately the same date.

Three vessels were destoyed in gales on the 27th and 28th of October 1880.

"Soon after the loss of the schooner JOHANNA at about 8.20, the signal guns again announced a vessel in distress, the men of the Tynemouth and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigades observed a wooden trawler, later proved to be the WONGA, entering the harbour close to the North Pier end. In an instant she was struck by a heavy sea, turned bottom up, then sank, all on board perished." (Whitaker) Built: 1875

21st September 1852. WILLIAM AND SARAH of South Shields and sloop PROVIDENCE wrecked on Herd Sand

1818 wreck of English cargo vessel which grounded on the Herd Sand and then was beached nearby on her arrival from Chichester; a wooden sailing vessel. NB: This account also appears in the Durham County Advertiser, but neither this source nor the Newcastle Courant has any account of the subsequent loss of this vessel, so she was possibly recovered.

23rd November 1851, Steamer WILLIAM AND MARY wrecked on Herd Sand

Channel Island Craft Valliant wrecked during gales February 10th 1871.The ship was wrecked alongside REMEMBRANCE...JANE...ANN...JABEZ...BRITISH QUEEN...and VALLIANT of Jersey...all on the Herd Sand. 'The lifeboats TYNE and NORTHUMBERLAND went off to the rescue with great success, except in the case of the JABEZ, which broke up so quickly, that all the crew were drowned.' (Whitaker)

May 1788 wreck of English cargo vessel which stranded on the Herd Sand on attempting to enter Shields on her passage to Leith. Laden with flour and barley, she was a wooden sailing vessel.

"During the course of Wednesday morning some vessels were observed along the coast and toward 2 o'clock they commenced to come in. A London brig, the UNITY of Lynn, which left Hartlepool on Monday, while attempting to take Shields Bar, struck and drove onto the Herd Sand. The crew were gallantly rescued by the South Shields lifeboat PROVIDENCE..." (Whitaker)
