Almshouses, now 18 old people's homes. 1837, by J. and B. Green for Tyne Mariners' Benevolent Institution; land given by Duke of Northumberland; restored 1973. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and plinth; Welsh slate roof; lead tower roof. Jacobean style, E-plan with central tower. Two storeys. Open-arched ground floor in central projecting bay with 3-storey tower. First floor niche contains commemorative inscription and arms of Trinity House, Newcastle. Clock stage above. Square bellcote and vane. Inserted twentieth century doors in wings and inserted casements in blocked doorways. First floor oriels. Conjoined octagonal chimneys at apex of gables to street, ridge chimneys on double span roof. LISTED GRADE 2

House. Circa 1830. English bond brick with painted ashlar plinth and ashlar dressings. Welsh slate roof with flat stone gable coping. Basement and two storeys. 4-panelled door under overlight in flat Tuscan doorcase. Sash windows. One corniced brick chimney. LISTED GRADE 2

Lighthouse. 1854-1895. Painted rendered ashlar lighthouse with glass lantern, on round platform with recessed door in south side. LISTED GRADE 2

House, now separate flats. Circa 1830 with late nineteenth century alterations. English bond brick with ashlar dressings. Welsh slate roof with end brick chimneys. Basement and three storeys. Inserted twentieth century door at left; sash window inserted in original doorway with stone architrave. Wedge stone lintels to sashes and to basement casements. On first floor single cast-iron balconies to outer windows. LISTED GRADE 2

House, dated 1760 on pediment resited in nineteenth century porch. Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and plinth; Welsh slate roof. Two storeys. Central one-storey porch with balustrade. Pedimented Ionic doorcase, probably removed from original entrance, contains 6-panelled double door under flat brick arch. Stone lintels to sash windows. Hipped roof with two end chimneys. Rear elevation shows yellow brick flat arches and a small dormer. Ordnance Survey bench mark on porch plinth. LISTED GRADE 2 Sailor / soldier Giuseppe Garibaldi 19th century Italian patriot stayed in this house in 1854 while visiting Tynemouth to brief local political and industrial leaders on his plans for a unified Italy. He was hailed throughout Europe as true idealist and honest politician. He was born in Nice on 4th Feb 1807 and died aged 75 in Caprerra on 2nd June 1882.

Inserted bay windows to ground floor of Nos. 4, 5 and 8. One brick chimney to each house. LISTED GRADE 2

Two houses, the rear of Nos. 5 and 6 Dawson Square. Circa 1840. Brick with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. Basement, three storeys and attics. Doors in basement. Sash windows with stone lintels and sills. Three round-headed sash windows in each house. LISTED GRADE 2

Hotel. 1872 by Thomas Moore of Sunderland (architect of Monkwearmouth Station and Corby Hall in Sunderland). Sandstone ashlar with Welsh slate roof. French and Italian design elements. Three storeys, attic and basement. Central door. Sash windows, either segmental or round-headed. Mansard roof with five dormers. Modern raised central attic. Included partly for townscape value in its prominent position on the sea front. Original plan does not show Mansard roof and dormer windows. Deposited plans July 1872. Built as seaside house for Duchess of Northumberland. LISTED GRADE 2

Chest tomb, circa 1714. Members of the Anderson family died 1688-1834. Sandstone ashlar. Four corner and two side rusticated pilasters; side and end panels have incised squares and low relief interlace, ribbon-tied bones and winged skull. Moulded edged table top. Inscriptions include commemorations of Gerrard died 1714; Thomas buried at All Saints, Newcastle, died 1783; and Matthew, resident in Russia and buried in Smolensky cemetery, St. Petersburg, died 1814. Corners of slab chipped at time of survey. LISTED GRADE 2
