October 1794 wreck of English sloop which stranded on Whitburn Steel in a gale, after departing from Sunderland; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, October 11, 1794...On Sunday last the sloop PELIUM, of Portsmouth, sailed from Sunderland, in the night met with a strong gale of wind at south-east, which forced her on shore on Whitburn Steel, where she sunk among the rocks, the crew were obliged to get upon the rigging to save themselves, but unfortunately the captain, one man and a boy was [sic] washed off, the captain's wife and a female passenger were on board, the former of whom shared the fate of her husband; the vessel is entirely lost, except some of her materials.
