On Saturday November 7th 1863 the steamer JAMES DIXON, while proceeding to sea, came into collision with an Italian barge [sic]; the JAMES DIXON then drove ashore on the foundation stones of the South Pier [and] the lifeboats TYNE and NORTHUMBERLAND were launched to her assistance. The TYNE picked up seven of her crew of eight; they were: James Barker, James Blackerel, John Williams, James Fern, Henry Kayles, Robert Kalender, Andrew Linklater. The NORTHUMBERLAND picked up the captain, but there is no record of his name.
