Shown on Ordnance Survey first edition of 1856. 102 men and boys killed in the Wallsend Colliery disaster in 1835 are buried here in an unmarked grave. 52 miners killed at the same pit in 1821 are also buried here and the Wallsend miners killed in the Heaton Pit disaster of 1815 (75 miners were killed in total). The victims of the Heaton disaster are commemorated by a plaque in the church. In 1994 a plaque to the victims of the Wallsend Pit disaster was set up, largely funded by branches of the National Union of Miners
